Green Tires
Green Tires -
Making the Right Choices for You and the EnvironmentTires make the world go around....billions of them at any moment, every day. Every one of them has an impact on the environment....either good or bad and your tire selection matters.
If you've ever noticed how your tires get hot after a long drive, that's because much of the energy transmitted from the engine is lost as friction and heat build in the tire. Tires are responsible for up to 20% of your fuel consumption, and while most big tire brands offer fuel-efficient products, not all tires are created equal.
A 10% reduction in the rolling resistance of your tires will reduce your fuel consumption by 2% and a 50% differerence in rolling resistance is not uncommon amongst otherwise similar tires.
It's easy to see why buying the wrong tires can cost you big at the pump.
What are Green Tires?
Green tires have a low rolling-resistance and use less energy, which leads to lower CO2 emmissions. Green tires are manufactured with the environment in mind.
While the traditional tire contains 2-3 gallons of oil in the form of carbon black, real green tires use more environmentally friendly products in their innovative tread compounds that make them more resilient and provide better grip than their traditional counterparts.
Nokian uses canola oil in it's tread compound to improve grip in icy and wet conditions, Michelin uses silica in it's "GREEN X" tires to to improve wet traction and reduce rolling-resistance and Yokohama uses citrus oil in its "Super Nanopower Rubber" to reduce the amount of oil used in a tire's production by 80%. .
Are Green Tires expensive?
A little. But these are brand-name, premium products, that are usually the flagship tires of a company. You're buying the best!
